Pulmonary Physicians

We have eleven board-certified pulmonologists who are experts in the evaluation of patients with breathing or lung problems, such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, and abnormal chest x-rays.


  • Daniel J. Barth, DO

    Daniel J. Barth, DO, was born and raised in Iowa. He completed his medical degree at Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. His internal medicine residency was completed through the University of Iowa – Des Moines at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He completed his pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, critical care and pulmonary disease. Areas of special interest include COPD, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension.

  • Angela D. Beckel, ARNP

    Dr. Angie Beckel, ARNP, FNP-C, is a native of Norwalk. Angie is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Bachelor, Masters, and Doctorate in Nursing from the University of Iowa. Her doctoral project involved increasing education to patients with COPD to improve outcomes. Angie and her husband, Adam, have one son.

  • Steven G. Berry, MD

    Steven G. Berry, M.D., was born and raised in St. Paul, MN, where he completed his secondary education. He received a bachelor of arts degree at Luther College in Decorah, IA, and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Internal medicine training in Michigan and pulmonary fellowship training at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City led to private practice in Des Moines with Dr. Liu and Dr. Gervich. He has a special interest in asthma and pulmonary rehabilitation. Dr. Berry is board-certified in internal and pulmonary medicine. He is a fellow of American College of Physicians and American College of Chest Physicians. He and his wife, Linda, have four children.

    He has a special interest in asthma and pulmonary rehabilitation, which will celebrated it’s 25 year of existence in the Fall of 2012.


  • Beth A. Borden, ACNP-BC

    Beth Borden ACNP-BC was born and raised in International Falls, Minnesota. After working as a critical care nurse for 9 years, she obtained her Bachelors degree at Mercy College of Heath Sciences in Des Moines. Beth began working as a nurse in the field of cardiothoracic surgery before pursuing her Masters degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

  • Kerry J. Canady, DO

    Kerry J. Canady, DO was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, IA. She received her undergraduate degree at Iowa State University in Ames, IA and her medical degree from Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA. She completed her internal medicine residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. Her pulmonary and critical care training was completed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Canady is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine and board eligible in critical care medicine.

  • Maxwell S. Cosmic, MD

    Maxwell S. Cosmic, M.D., was born in India. He received his medical degree from Trivandrum Medical College, India. He underwent further training in internal medicine in England and obtained MRCP (Member of Royal College of Physicians of UK) degree. He moved with his family to the United States in 1997. His internal medicine residency was at SUNY Buffalo, NY, where he served as chief resident. He subsequently completed his pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship training at Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. During fellowship training, he did research on genetic link of venous thromboembolism. Dr. Cosmic is board certified in pulmonary, critical care and internal medicine. Areas of special interest include asthma, pulmonary embolism and critical care medicine. He and his wife, Jaflet, have two children.

  • Neil R. Horning, MD

    Neil R. Horning, M.D., was born and raised in Bristol, TN. He received a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Tennessee, and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. His internal medicine, and pulmonary and critical care medicine training was obtained at Barnes Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. At Washington University, he conducted research regarding the immunopathogenesis of asthma, and the optimization of immunosuppression of lung transplant recipients. Dr. Horning is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine. His interests include asthma, immunology, emphysema, and pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Horning and his wife, Susan, have one son.

  • Bryon N. Johnson, DO

    Bryon N. Johnson, D.O. was born and raised in Des Moines, IA. He received a bachelor of science degree at Iowa State University in Ames, IA and his medical degree from Des Moines University in Des Moines IA. He completed his internal medicine training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as well. He has special interest in pulmonary oncology and management of critical illness. He is board certified in pulmonary, internal medicine and critical care medicine. He was the recipient of the Young Investigator Award in 2010, which was granted by the American College of Chest Physicians. He and his wife, Soraya, have one daughter.

  • Jonathan Smith, NP-C

    Jonathan Smith, NP-C was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Allen College in Waterloo, Iowa. He spent 7 years working as a nurse in various fields, including 2 in critical care. He then obtained his Masters in Nursing from Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska. He is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a Family Nurse Practitioner.


  • Blair D. Westerly, MD

    Blair Westerly, M.D. was born in Des Moines and grew up in Indianola, IA. He received his B.A. in biology at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and his M.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and his Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During fellowship, Dr. Westerly conducted research on the effects of hypercapnia on cellular signaling and injury repair, and areas of special interest in pulmonary medicine include fibrotic lung disease and all aspects of pulmonary physiology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine and board eligible in Critical Care Medicine. He is married with two children and resides in Ankeny, IA.

  • Bradley E. Wilcox, DO

    Bradley E. Wilcox, DO was born in Storm Lake, IA. He received a BS from Iowa State University and obtained his DO from Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine and board certified in Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Wilcox is married with five children and currently resides in Waukee.

  • Michael C. Witte, DO

    Michael C. Witte, D.O., was born in Muscatine. His wife, Linda, grew up in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City as an undergraduate and the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, graduating in 1977. His internal medicine and pulmonary and critical care training was obtained at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, CO. He is board-certified in internal, pulmonary and critical care medicine. He joined CIC Associates after his Army duty was completed in 1987. His interests are critical care medicine and all aspects of pulmonary diagnostics.

  • Jason B. Wittmer, MD

    Jason B. Wittmer, M.D. was born and raised in central Kansas. He completed undergraduate and medical education at the University of Kansas. He completed internal medicine residency and pulmonary/critical care fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Wittmer is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, sleep medicine and critical care medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He and his wife, Kathryn, have two sons.
